It is so beautiful here. Great photo ops, good dogs watching, fun on the hot days, and still scenic on the rainy ones. There is grass and sand and a little area to wash off in. There is one or two docks and you can walk the whole stretch to the bridge but to get to the part for walking over the bridge is a bit of a hike.
San Francisco is often foggy and cold, but when it's warm, Crissy Field is the place to go with your kids. This past weekend, SF was sporting temperatures in the high 80s which is perfect for the beach.
We came with a bag full of sand toys, cold drinks, sunscreen and some kites. Usually, Crissy Field has some nice winds for kite-flying, but there wasn't a gust to be found unfortunately for our little guy.
We just hung out and dunked our toes in the ice cold Bay a couple of times to cool off. From Crissy Field, you can just enjoy the beach or you can also walk/bike/drive up towards the Golden Gate Bridge and cross over to the Marin side and take some photos of the city.
Pack a picnic or stop at Safeway or the Marina for food to enjoy while relaxing here for the day. Be sure to dress in layers because it does get COLD. If you still can't get warm enough, you can always head over to Sports Basement and pick up a quintessential fleece for the youngest kid in the family to the oldest.
Restored to its original duney state, this is a nice place to walk, take photos of the Golden Gate Bridge, sit on a narrow beach, fly a kite, bird-watch in the wetlands, Rollerblade or stroll on a 1.3-mile trail, and enjoy watching boating and windsurfing activity offshore. Stop in at the Gulf of the Farallones Marine Sanctuary visitor center to see photos and exhibits of sea creatures, including great white sharks, and touch marine animals in a simulated tidepool. The Warming Hut Cafe and Bookstore is a cozy spot where you can stop for drinks, light meals, and snacks (415–561–3040). You can walk from here to Fort Point, and on the Golden Gate Promenade, all the wayaround the Embarcadero to AT&T Park and beyond.
I think this is the best family beach in SF. There are amazing views of the bay and the Golden gate bridge, plenty of parking, long bike paths, and tons of sandy beaches to play in. You can push a stroller along the bike/jogging path. There are no big waves to worry about with the kids, so they can splash and play all they want in the water along the shore. There are several loccations with bathrooms. You can also bring the dogs to play with you along some of the beach. There are grassy areas to picnic in and and bookstore and cafe. You can walk down to the fort underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. You can walk out on the piers and watch people fish for crabs and fish. It's really a beatiful place.
We spent the entire day at Crissy Field and Fort Mason and loved every bit of it. Today was sunny and warm, so it was perfect for spending time outside, and at Crissy field there is so much space to walk, play, picnic, bike ride, splash in the water, and play with the dog. If the day is sunny, expect a lot of joggers, bikes, and dogs. However, there is so much space, it is relaxing at Crissy Field even on a crowded day. The view of the bay and the Golden Gate bridge is incredible from Crissy Field. There are batherooms, a cafe and bookstore (called the Warming Hut) next to the beach on the Bridge end of Crissy Field. Great place to go with the kids (be prepared for the dogs).
My toddler loves to run on the path, play in the sand and step in the icy water. This convergence of favorites is enhanced by the kite flying nearby and the cool Golden Gate Bridge.
Best quiet spot for a view of the Golden Gate Bridge and a spectacular view of San Francisco. My 2 1/2 and 5 year old grandkids love to play in the sand, explore the spacious paths along the bay, the fishing wharf at the end of the road, as well as the little grassy hills and sculptured borders, park benches and picnic tables. When tired of chasing herons and shore birds or looking for starfish, we rest in the cozy warming hut for coffee, snacks, books and gifts.
Older kids and adults can continue hiking up to the bridge along the picturesque steep but well-maintained trails to the popular spot where tourist buses are.
This is a nice place to take the whole family - including the dog. Whether there is a special event (Blue Angels) or not, this is a nice place to be in nature and have a picnic.
