$10 per person, children under 6 are free, or $27 per carload group
While this is a work in progress and no where near completion, check out this memorial and the numerous museums full of history of not just Crazy Horse, but all Native American Indians. I believe a better understanding of the history of our interactions with Native American Indians is a MUST for kiddos old enough to begin to understand history from a less black and white point of view. This is a good place to start as the art, carvings and museums offer talking points for families not sure how to begin these discussions.
This stop will take you less than half a day; plan to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy while walking the grounds.
My family did enjoy this trip, but my children were 13 and 10 at the time. It may not be enjoyable for younger children. The crazy, bumpy ride to the monument was entertaining in itself. The driver gave us the history of the place, which I guess is really what made me appreciate it more. It is not a finished monument, but the money you spend there goes toward getting it completed. We visited after leaving Mt. Rushmore and none of us were disappointed.
It was very disappointing. In fact you do not even have to go the memorial. You are not going to see anymore than you already can see from the road. In the memorial, you can visit overpriced gift shop and look at some paintings of horses and some historical facts about Ziolkowski and watch the movie about the monument. The monument itself is not finished and I am not sure it is going to be finished soon. When we came there, our kids were very excited to go to the mountain. They thought they can go up and explore. However, there is no such an option. The only thing they did is to have “a tour to the monument”, which turned out to be to the BOTTOM of the monument. They put you in the bus, drive past the old cabin where Ziolkowski lived, then stop in the middle of the road and shown you the monument. Of course, they charge separately for this. I do not think it worth going there. Especially with kids, because they will be very disappointed.
Didn't enjoy this one as much. Kinda cool to see, but don't really need to go back and wouldn't have been disappointed to miss it. It is unfinished and just in general kind of boring. Maybe the history buffs of the world will enjoy it more than we did.
Your children will be able to tell their grandchildren that they remember when that monument was being built! It is quite a sight to see this massive art project in the process of being built. It is inexpensive to visit, and just a short jaunt off the road. There is also a laser light show at night.
