Our family has visited many National Park Service military sites. Cowpens National Battlefield is a very well-organized, clean and inviting NPS location. This site commemorates a major Revolutionary battle between the forces of Daniel Morgan and "Bloody" Banastre Tarleton.
The NPS has completely renovated their visitors center and movie theater. Their movie is very well-done, and prepared our family (2 adults, 3 children) to tour the rest of the battlefield. The battlefield features an incredibly beautiful walk through meadows and woods. Park Rangers are diligently working to restore the battlefield to its original state. Wild turkeys and deer roam the battlefield. One can see a number of birds and squirrels as well as butterflies and other insects. Cowpens has an excellent Junior Ranger program; the information for the program can be printed directly off the NPS website.
We would highly recommend this battlefield as a daytrip, and one could even combine this location with Kings Mountain National Military Park, or the Prime Outlets in Gaffney, SC.
