Beautiful beach north of Santa Cruz Pier and the main beach. A little less crowded than the main beach and gentle waves that kids can play in quite safely.  Life guard on duty during daylight hours.  Nice clean sand with restaurants nearby.

"Mellow waves at Cowells"

Cowells is a great place for kids to enjoy the waves and play in the sand. Also a favorite spot for beginning surfers and surf classes.  The surf shops across the street rent boards & wetsuits and offer classes.  Parking is sometimes hard to find, but there is a little parking lot where you can unload your stuff.  Showers and bathrooms at this beach.

"A perfect day at the beach"

Cowell Beach is perfect for a lazy day at the beach with the kids.  Without the crowds of main beach that always cause me to be concerned about keeping an eye on the kids all the time, Cowell Beach is so much more relaxed and quiet because it's away from the hub of activity South of the Santa Cruz Pier.  The beach was clean except for the piles of seaweed (not too much though).  There was also a lifeguard on duty which was nice.  The waves were gentle enough that i didn't worry.  Bathrooms near the parking lot.  Didn't check to see if they were clean.  A few restaurants nearby in case you don't want to pack a picnic you can easily walk to one.
