The country club plaza is a gorgeous and clean, pretty place for expensive shopping and eating. There are not a huge amount of childrens' activities and everything is rather costly. This area is cool for seeing lights at Christmas or impressing a date with how much you can spend but it wouldn't be a kid's first choice. If you go here though, Cheesecake Factory is great and there's a movie theater as well.
I absolutley love to visit the Plaza. Definitely a must-see for visitors to our area. The lights at Christmas are amazing, as well as the many fountains that are scattered everywhere. It has some of the best shopping in Kansas City, along with eclectic shops as well!
The Country Club Plaza is known for two things mostly: the Plaza lights (turned on during the ceremony at Thanksgiving evening) and the out door mall shopping and restaurants. But one of the things that can be easy to overlook is the fountains and statues.
I conduct and "art scavanger hunt" every other year on the plaza for highschool students and grades 5th-8th with chaperones. I give the groups lists of art and fountains they have to find. The kids snap a picture with their phone or digital camera and mark the location on their map. I use the two sites below to compile my lists. It is amazing to me just how much art there is in this fairly small section of the city.

Kids over the age of 12 can appreciate the art, especially if its involved with some sort of game. Younger kids will enjoy looking at some of the statues and fountains, but attention will wane quickly I suspect.
Mill Creek Park (where the perhaps most famous Kansas City is) is on the east edge of the Plaza and is a great place to end your tour by having a picnic near the J.C. Nichols Fountain.
Great outdoor shopping or window shopping but very little to do for the kid. It does look very nice around the holidays when its all decorated. We love to go there, but find that our kids get bored quite fast there. Things that they might still enjoy, live musuc in the street.
Great place to safely let your kids run amok while doing some shopping in a pleasant outdoor shopping mall. There are many fun stores for kids, high end fashion boutiques as well as a movie theater and a Border's Bookstore.
Fun Fact: The Plaza is America's first shopping center.
We used to live in Kansas City and the Plaza area was always a hit for guests coming in town. There are some great restaurants, live jazz and blues and fun nightlife. During the day, you can shop around the outdoor mall with ease. And, you MUST check out Hall's Department store, it's a little taste of NY shopping in the midwest.
