Coronado City Beach

Ocean Boulevard, Coronado, California
9 Reviews
Type: Beaches & Lakes
Ages: Ages 2 — adult
Cost: Free

This stretch of beach is nearly two-miles.  There is plenty of room to play and never feels too crowded.  This is one of San Diego County's widest beaches, it expands to 100 yards or more in spots along a spit between the U.S. Naval Air Station North Island and the Naval Amphibious Base. Enjoy swimming, surfing, watching pelicans dive for fish, wading in tide pools, barbecue or grab a fancy drink at a Hotel Del cafe.

"A little bit of Oz in California"

Once a year my hubbie, kids and I take a weekend out of the Inland Empire and have a mini vacation in Coronado.  We have usually done this during the months of February or March and the weather has always been perfect for us at this beach.  After the kids have climbed the rocks lining the street, we jump into the white, soft sand and run as fast as possible to the ocean water.  With a view of "the Del", we find a spot of warm sand to settle in and have watched everything from morning weddings on the beach to sand castle building competitions.  Overhead, jets fly by coming to and from the nearby Navy base.  Ice cream shops, pizza joints and Mexican restaurants are walking distance from this beach if you are ready for some lunch.

"Most beautiful beach in California"

That place is picture perfect and idyllic. The sand was soft with lots of little shells to pick up. The waves were perfect for my 4 y-olds and my 11y-old. There was a bathroom and showers, lifeguards. The view is amazing. I'd been wanting to stay on Coronado for years and was not disappointed.

"Best Beach in Southern CA"

This is by far the best beach in San Diego County & probably Southern CA. The scenery is gorgeous, the sand is pristine & it is a true "shell hunting heaven." We always walk away with buckets of great shells - even some sand dollars! You have gorgeous mansions behind you & views of the Hotel Del to the south.

Parking is free - yes, FREE - and surprisingly plentiful. Park along the boulders or cruise up one of the residential streets & snag a spot. There are plenty of access points along the beach.

The water is far from the beach access & you may have to climb over a couple of large rocks, so do pack accordingly. Also, please be respectful of the fact that people do live in those gorgeous houses right on the beach, so don't hang out brushing piles of sand off of Johnny's legs onto the street in front of their property. There are some beach showers located to the north side for your use.

The waves are pretty mild most of the time, so it's a perfect beach for little ones. Take a shell bucket, some sand toys & enjoy. Bonus - you get to drive over the Coronado Bridge to get there. That's always a fun treat!

"Beautiful Beach"

We had visited this beach before yrs ago, but without kids.  Unfortunately our trip this time was on a raw, windy, cold, day, but we just HAD to show the kids this famous beach.  The highlight of the trip was seeing a Wedding Photo Shoot complete with bride and groom models, an archway, wine glasses, flowers.  The poor "bride" was shivering and needed a wrap between "takes"...lol.  Who says Californians don't do things DIFFERENTLY?  The Hotel Coronado is simply MAGNIFICENT!

"Favorite San Diego Beach"

Coronado has always been my favorite beach to visit in San Diego.  I never tire of walking along the boardwalk while licking an ice cream cone!  The scenery is beautiful and the waves seem to be milder than other beaches in San Diego.  And it never seems to be as crowded either.  The parking can be a pain sometimes since there really isn't a "parking lot" but there is a fun dog beach if you have dogs.  I highly recommend this!

"A Great Beach "

Coronado is about the most charming city I've ever visited.  The whole city is gorgeous and this beach is too.  There is room to accommodate a lot of people so even when it's crowded, you don't feel like it is.  The beach is generally clean and you can usually catch a few waves that allow for a pleasant afternoon of boogey boarding in the sun.  We've even seen a pod of small whales or dolphins swimming not far off shore.  Don't bother with other beaches.  Go straight to Coronado!

"Perfect beach for young kids"

Coronado beach is good for the younger kids because the waves are not too high and there is lots of sand to make awesome sandcastles! The beach is clean and the sand is soft. We arrived at 10am on a Sunday and parked right on Ocean Blvd. with no meters to feed. My little ones both enjoyed frolicking in the sand. It was my one year old's first time in the ocean water and she loved it! There are outdoor showers available for rinsing off. Coronado is a very nice area and you can't help to ooh and aah over the beautiful homes while you're there.

"Coronado beaches and restaurants"

The ride on the San Diego-Coronado Bay Ferry is a fun 15 minute trip over to the Ferry Market Plaza which has a variety of casual restaurants and sheltered beaches perfect for little ones.  Or you can drive over the Coronado bridge and visit the famous Hotel Del Coronado and white sand beach which has more accessible parking and less crowds than La Jolla and some of the other beaches.  We rent beach toys, beach chairs, umbrellas, ice-chests and infant cabanas, so you can enjoy the beach in full comfort.

"loved it"

short time spent there, but what was seen was really nice.  shops and the town itself is very laid back.  cute shops and the beach was not overcrowded at all.  Kids could run around at the beach.  town is very bike friendly.  A lot of people in town ride their bikes all over.  I felt left out next time I'll be sure to take our bikes.
