This was one of my favorite beaches growing up but it has changed quite a bit. Due to its close proximity to an island pass, this beach has very rough surf and a dangerous undertow at various times throughout the year. Also, despite the constant efforts by local law enforcement, this area has become a gang hangout. There have been many gang related incidents including fatal shootings among gang members. No tourists have been harmed but it's not worth the risk. Despite the beautiful shelling and scenery, it would be better to travel a bit north or south to find a more family friendly beach to visit.
Coquina Beach is a family friendly beach..lots of picnic tables among the shady australian pines. The beach is famous for its "coquinas" which are tiny colorful shells that burrow into the sand as the waves receed. The beach itself is narrower than other Sarasota area beaches and the surf could be a little rougher. The communities of Longboat Key and Anna Maria offer many wonderful restaurants ranging from $ to $$$$$.
Equally popular Coquina Beach wraps around the pass and provides beachgoers with lifeguards, picnic areas, concessions, boat ramps, good snorkeling, a playground, a mangrove nature trail, and lots of shady Australian pine trees.
