"Fun with the Family"

On an eighteenth-century farm, animals were left to graze freely, not penned up as they are today. In the root cellar the farmer’s family stored carrots, onions, and potatoes; in the springhouse, flowing water cooled milk and eggs. The clothing was made by hand, spun of natural fibers. All these details are meticulously re-created at Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation.
This is actually a working farm where 120 acres of crops are grown, using methods that date back more than 200 years. Here you can observe the staff demonstrating cooking, spinning, weaving, sheep shearing, planting, and harvesting. Even the clothing worn by interpreters is authentic—right down to the fibers. School groups get a chance to dip candles or cut firewood in the authentic manner.
Also in the park, the adjacent Tyler Arboretum has an extensive collection of native and nonnative plants. Highlights include a giant sequoia with a circumference of 9 feet and a unique fragrant garden designed specifically for the visually impaired. The arboretum is open daily 8:00 A.M. until dusk; admission is free. Call (610) 566–5431.
