It was a fun area where kids and adults learn about the history of the mackinaw straits and see how people lived in colonial Michilimackinac. You start with a short movie presentation that teaches you when they were founded and how they have evolved over the years and who the important people who made a difference to the area through out history. The workers, from babies in their Mama's arms to elderly people, walking around are all in costume and will tell you about the house or area of the fort they are standing in and act out typical life activities... they will be tending gardens with colonial era tools, soldiers marching (even young boys which surprises kids of today that young boys were soldiers) cooking over an open fire or hand sewing clothing. There are activities and craft to try out around the fort too.
Sure to help your kids appreciate the creature comforts they are accustom to as well as teach them a real life history lesson they will remember for years to come!
Not a lot to do. Mostly a photo opportunity. For reenactors it would be a great time because there is a lot to read about. The living history reenactment was cute. Not really recommended for the little ones, too boring. There is a lunch area and a store, but the store didn't really have all that much worth buying. Lunch was good.
I have been going to Colonial Michilimackinak since I was a young child and I have always liked going there. It is right on the beach near the Mackinac bridge and there are many good photo opportunities. This is a good place to start if you plan to visit Mackinaw Island. It's a great place for a child to learn about the area. Admission is free for kids 4 and under.
