Coggshall Park in a beautiful location tucked away in the woods of Fitchburg, MA. It's a lovely place to take the family for a picnic, a nature hike, bird watching, and to the small playground for kids. In the center of the park is a small body of water, called Mirror Lake. There are ducks and swans that inhabit the lake area, and help to add to the beauty of the area. The swans are only there in warm weather months, and are cared for at a local farm in the winter.
This large park, over 250 acres in size, is largely a passive recreation area. It was extensively renovated in 1990, and is cared for by the Friends of Coggshall Park.
Its features include a gazebo on Mirror Lake, a soon to be rebuilt stone house facing the lake, a playground, softball field, and plenty of parking and walking trails.
There is plenty of parking, picnic tables, and benches to sit and enjoy the scenery. Back in the "old days" people were allowed to feed the ducks/swans, but they strongly urge us not to do that anymore. There are signs all over the lake indicating this.
Directions to the park can be obtained by the above mentioned website, however, some of the information is outdated, like the contact person, etc. But if you scroll to the bottom, you will find a set of good directions.
You can bring your dogs to the park, but they must remain on a leash, and are not allowed directly adjacent to the water. Still, there are many locations for a great walk with your dog, and they will surely get a nice bout of fresh air and exercise.
Currently, as of 5/11/10, there are two portable potties for use. Monty Tech, a local technical highschool, is busy rebuilding the decorative stone house, which used to be where the restrooms were located. The house was destroyed in a fire two years ago.
For people looking for a location to host a party, or another type of reception, the gazebo on the lake is able to be rented for a nominal fee. This park is also a popular place for wedding photos, school photos, or general nature shots.
You won't be dissapointed if you venture into Coggshall Park for a leisurely visit.
