"city hall"

Nothing really special normally, but at Christmas, City Hall is beautiful. Its worth walking through on your holiday tour of the city. Its an impressive building to little kids!! They think its neat how you can walk right through the courtyard and see the streets on the other sides.

"Get close to William Penn"

Many people don't realize that it's actually possible to go up inside the tower in the center of City Hall. Buy a ticket at the gift shop in the base of the building, take an elevator up to the seventh floor, and then follow a red stripe on the floor to escalators that will take you to the waiting area.

The elevator to the top is itself fascinating to kids, old-fashioned and small as it is. It also has glass walls, so you will see the tower's clock from the inside as you ascend. Once you're at the top you can look up and see the famous 37-foot tall statue of William Penn that sits atop the building towering immediately over you. Since the city and surrounding area are fairly low and flat, you get a great view of the city and suburbs as well as the Delaware River, with it impressive bridges to New Jersey.

"Amazing Architecture"

Take  the time to walk the grounds of City Hall as you make your way to/from the Franklin Institute, Academy of Natural Sciences, Museum of Art.  The scale of the buliding is impressive and the courtyards remind one of Europe's public building grounds.  Hear the story of the William Penn statue atop City Hall (no longer the tallest point in the City) and enjoy the bustle of downtown.

"Fun with the Family"

Philadelphia’s City Hall celebrated its one hundredth birthday in 2001. See the courtroom where the film Philadelphia was made and the 548-foot-tall tower that is topped by a statue of William Penn. The bronze statue was designed by Alexander Milne Calder, grandfather of the twentieth-century mobile creator Alexander Calder. The statue is 37 feet tall. Billy Penn’s nose alone is 18 inches long.
A virtual tour is available on the Web site at www.geocities.com/Athens/Delphi/2115. Volunteer guides from the Foundation for Architecture conduct real tours departing from Room 121, the Tour Office, Monday through Friday at 12:30 P.M. There are tours of the tower only Monday through Friday every fifteen minutes from 9:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. All tours are free.
The observation deck (at William Penn’s feet) affords a spectacular view of the city.

"City Hall"

The architecture is amazing but it is geared more towards older children. Beautiful buildings.
