From June-August they are also open on Mondays; 9:00am - 5:00pm.
We decided to bring the kids (ages 5 and 9) to the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge today, most spring weekends we try to do something outside but it was cold and rainy so this seemed like it would be a great alternative. It was however the first and last time we will go here. When I think of a children's museum I think of fun hands on activities with lots of things to keep a childs attention. This was not like that at all, it was a lot of pictures of Oak Ridge history and exhibits that were behind glass or roped off, not hands on at all. There were a few places for kids to run around but none of then kept my kids attention for more than a few minutes. I doubt either of the kids learned a thing and after about 45 minutes both of the kids were asking to leave. The museum was clean and well kept but not the fun weekend activity we were looking for. Also we had chosen this place because it was cold and damp outside but I found it very cold inside. I would not recommend this place.
It's housed in an old elementary school building and looks pretty run down from the outside. Our kids had a good time but in comparison to other childrens museums we've been too we we're too terribly impressed. The coolest part is probably the full size "doll house" for kids to go play in. Our daughter loved this and could have played there for hours. There were a couple of places where my husband and I got more out of the room than the kids because it was history about Oakridge which is rather interesting but not to a 6,4, and 2 year old. Overall it was a good time but it wasn't anything fantastic.
This museum was so nice that my children ask to go back. They have a life size doll house that has pretend food, a doorbell, a living room, bedrooms and a bathroom. There is also a puppet area where the kids can put on their own show. Then they can climb and slide on the castle and the space ship.
My children love this place. As the title would suggest, I find it a bit mind-numbing after the first visit. It's definitely an "old-school" museum (both literally and figuratively) without the technology that makes so many others cool. Also, it was a great place for my son's 3rd birthday with rates being affordable!
I took my girls and my niece and nephew to visit one day after we got lost looking for the AMSE. It was one of the only times I've been lost that actually turned out to be better than what we'd planned. I was afraid it would be a little too childish for my nephew, but all the kids loved it. The dollhouse is wonderful fun. They loved looking for animals in the rainforest room, and the spaceship and train were a big hit too. They all spent a while playing in the dam system exhibit. It was well worth the money and the time I spent driving around lost:) Now if I can find it next time, we'll visit again in the future for more fun.
We have been to the Childrens Museum multiple times and never get bored going. They are always putting up new exhibits, and there's a large amount of play areas for the kids to enjoy, encluding a lifesize dollhouse, jungle area, water play, space ship with slide, and a lifesize caboose to play in. I recommend you visit. It's fun!
I am sure that children love any sort of interactive museum, I myself do not find this museum to be anything special. It is nice and clean and a decent price. This is the sort of museum I was glad to have daddy take the kids to, or even a field trip from school. So long as the kiddos like it, that's what is important.
We took my daughter to the Museum last year. She loved all of the exhibits, but her favorite (and mine too) was the life size dollhouse. She LOVED it!
The workers there were very nice. We spent a wonderful afternoon there. The outdoor exhibit was closed the day we went, so I look forward to going back for that.
This museum is tons of fun because you can actually touch most everything in it! From musical instruments to a water dam system for the kids to try out, there is so much to keep little hands and eyes busy during a trip here. There is also a life sized doll house for the kids to play is which is so much fun! My toddler still talks about this place almost daily. It is situated in an old school, so the layout is a bit different from a typical museum which is an adventure since you never know what you will see around the next doorway. They do hold special exhibits and classes from time to time - the info can be obtained from the website.
