I found myself grinning constantly while exploring the children's section of this library and then enjoying the family story time. It was such a delightful afternoon spent in a beautiful building surrounded by books and my kids.
The parking garage at 524 South Flower Street Garage has arrangements with the library for discounted rates. On Saturdays it is $1 for the entire visit with validation. We parked there and nearly hit the roof with our mini van and additional roof rack. I had to apply for a library card in order to get the parking validated - but it was free and quick to get one. So no trouble - just a few extra steps and details to manage.
The gorgeous rotunda is on the 2nd floor and my kids loved looking at it. The globe light and the murals are fascinating. Great for an "I Spy" game! The children's section is right off of the rotunda and has it's own set of beautiful murals, hidden pictures in the carpet, and gorgeous lighting. Large windows bring in natural light and make these rooms incredibly comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful and we sat and read for a while.
At 2pm the librarians went through the section inviting everyone to the family story time in the theatre of the children's section. The two of them had puppets, read 6-7 books, sang songs with the families, and put on a puppet show. My kids (ages 6 and 9) were engaged and enjoyed it. There were kids of all ages, down to 1 or 2 and they seemed to enjoy it. There are chidlren's programs all through the week that are free. Be sure to check it out!
Even though we are over 1 hour away, I hope to return on a regular basis. It's a great way to spend an afternoon with the family.
If you live or are vacationing in the downtown LA area, be sure to check out the central library. Not only is it full of an amazing assortment of books, it is beautiful inside! Be sure to check out the rotunda's amazing ceilings and enjoy the rotating gallery full of historical or artistic displays. The kid's collection is expansive and even boasts its own beautiful stage where a variety of kid's activities are hosted during the year. After you enjoy the books, grab a bite to eat or an ice cream in the snack bar area. If it is a nice day, and it most likely is in LA, head outdoors to the Maguirr Gardens to enjoy your tasty treats.
