I absolutely love the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. This church's architecture is simply incredible and the peaceful and calm atmosphere can really take you to a new place in the world. I love to come here and pray for all my loved ones and thank god for all the blessing in my life, such as my beautiful children. This really is a place that more people should stop by to.
This is what my little ones call the St. John the Divine Cathedral. Once you walk in it demands respect. Walking through is enough to bring forth a long string of questions from my 4 year old, and they love participating in the ongoing events for families with kids of all ages.
The also have events, such as choir and instrumental concerts every so often. It is an amazing place to go visit and expose your children to some beautiful architecture.
This Gothic- and Romanesque-style work in progress was started in 1892 and when finished, some fifty years from now, will be the largest cathedral in the world. Much larger than Notre Dame, with ceilings more than 100 feet high and a capacity for 10,000 people, this is an awe-inspiring place. Along with regular Episcopalian series, the cathedral sponsors classical, New Age, and Native American programs; cocerts; and special events year-round.
My sons’ favorite event occurs in October, on St. Francis of Assisi’s feast day. New Yorkers come by the hundreds, clutching their dogs, cats, hamsters, parakeets, boa constrictors, and even elephants, to walk down the aisle and have their beasts blessed.
