Zip Line tour on Catalina Island
Begins and ends at Descanso Beach.
I had an amazing time on the Catalina Zip Line! My kids were too young to go (they are only three) but there was a family in my group with an 8 year old, 12 year old, and 16 year old and they all had a blast.
I have always wanted to zipline but I also have a huge fear of falling and heights so I knew it would be a challenge. The guides were incredibly reassuring, helpful, and understanding. They made sure I felt comfortable and even offered to give me a little nudge instead of letting me step off on my own since they knew that would be the hardest part for a scaredy cat like me!
Once I got going, I was in heaven. The views were incredible (I just looked out instead of down) and it felt more like being on a slide than a roller coaster. There was no stomach in my throat feeling that I was expecting. There is a guide on the other end of the zip to help you "land' and keep you very safe and secure. It is very obvious that safety is the number one priority.
There was a total of 5 zips. My favorite was the second one with its INCREDIBLE panoramic view of the ocean. Amazing. By the two zips, I was hopping off the edge like it was no big deal. I couldn't believe it!
The tour lasts 2 hours and there are no more than 10 people per tour. Anyone less than 60 lbs must ride tandem with someone else and the combined weight can't exceed 245lbs (they will weight you so no fibbing!). You must wear flat closed toed shoes on the zip line so don't show up in flip flops because they won't let you ride. Reservations are highly recommended because the zip line is very popular and will sell out. Trust me, its worth it!
Bottom Line: I think this is a MUST DO activity while on Catalina. I would definitely do it again and again. It really is so much fun! Also- even though kids as young as 5 are allowed to zip, I would think it may be a little much for the average 5 year old. I recommend waiting until you know your kids won't chicken out. If they are 7 and love thrill rides, I think they will love this!
Disclosure: The Santa Catalina Island Company paid for me to participate in the Catalina Zipline Eco Tour as part of a press trip in Avalon. They did not ask me to express any particular opinion about the zip line and as always, all opinions about any hotel or acitivity are my own.
