At the end of the Balboa Peninsula and Pier, do not miss taking a forty-five- or ninety-minute sightseeing cruise aboard the old-fashioned riverboat Pavilion Paddy. You will wind your way through the meandering channels of Newport Harbor and see some imposing homes and dazzling yachts of the rich and famous (such as the late John Wayne and Shirley Temple Black). Tours run mostly year-round. Sunday brunch cruises are also available in season. This is also the dock for Catalina Flyer service to Catalina Island offshore.
The Catalina Passenger Service operates the Catalina Flyer, its 500-passenger catamaran vessel, from Balboa Pavilion in Newport Beach. It offers one round-trip seventy-fiveminute cruise daily to neighboring Santa Catalina Island, a pristine, unspoiled isle only 26 miles out to sea yet a world away. (See the Greater Los Angeles chapter for Long Beach/San Pedro embarkation
choices.) Fares and departure times are subject to change seasonally. Reservations are required.
