Summer is Turtle Time at Caswell Beach. From May to August female turtles come a shore at night to lay their eggs. Starting in late July from dusk until midnight the young turtles hatch and make their way to the ocean.
The second community on Oak Island is Caswell Beach. In addition to the gentle tides along the 4 miles of beach, here you will find the Oak Island Lighthouse, the nation’s most modern, which opened in 1958.
Also located on this beach is the Oak Island Coast Guard Station and Fort Caswell. Built in 1826, the fort is now owned by the North Carolina Baptist Assembly. The Civil War stone-and-earthen fort was abandoned in 1865 during a violent naval bombardment north of here. Today you can tour what remains of the fort and bunkers.
