"Beautiful in the spring"

Castlewood Canyon is a hiker's dream, but it's also adventure time for the kids. When you drive in for the first time, you have no idea why they call it a "canyon." But upon parking you quickly learn that you are on top of the canyon. The rim trails are either sidewalk or nicely groomed - good for getting perspective. Then you head down to Cherry Creek inside the canyon and let the wonder begin.

Take Highway 83 north of the Springs toward Denver. The park is about halfway between the Springs and Denver. The other option is to take the I-25 North and cut east toward Franktown at Castle Rock. Then it's just a few miles south to the park entrance.

The views and the scenery are incredible.  I've hiked in the spring and visited when the snow dots the ground in the winter. Each was a unique experience. I say, "Go anytime, as long as the driving is safe and the park is open." From the playground near the amphitheater you have a great view of Pikes Peak in the distance. The Visitor Center by the entrance is like a mini-nature center and a great starting point for your visit. The rangers are helpful in  recommending hikes for all age levels.  The ruins of the Castlewood Dam are a good destination and quite breathtaking to be so close to "history." There's a movie in the Visitor Center.

General wildlife warnings apply here. There are signs for rattlesnakes in the summer. Just talk to the rangers and they can tell you what's been spotted and where.

"My family loves going here"

Castlewood Canyon is a great place to go on a short or pretty long hike with the kids.  The trails are well maintained and they also have picnic areas. The best part for the little ones is their is a small stream running alongside some of the trail and we take swim suits and find a great place for a spash. There are alot of areas near the water to have a great lunch and the water is about up to their ankles and perfect for playing around. But be warned, that water is COLD!!
