My kids have grown up going to "Castle Park". They are now 10 and 8 and they still ask me frequently when we can go to this park. They love the large cinder block castle with it's stairs, bridge and turrets to peer over. They pretend to be knights and wage pretend battles and can play for hours here.
As a protective mom, my main concern when visiting "Castle Park" is that I cannot see my kids when they go on the other side of the castle wall. I have just established a rule with my kids that they have to be able to see me and cannot go on the other side without me. Thankfully, the designers of the park made it so that the castle is most enjoyed on only one side: the playground side. There really isn't much to do on the other side. And it is quite a ways from the street with a large grass field in-between.
As a side note: there is a very nice memorial to the soldiers who have fought and died in the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan located at the corner of Yale and Bryan. It is just across the grass from this park and is worth visiting and stopping to remember.
The castle structure surrounds the park like a fortress which the kids absolutely love. Clamber over a bridge, duck your head in the tunnel, and scale walls and rocks to conquer the cinderblock castle. There is something here for all ages and it's easy to see kids from every angle.
