You must arrive by 5pm if you wish to pick your own.
It took an hour in a half to get to the orchard. It was a bumpy ride up the mountain. Parking was plentyful. There were plenty of information booths to ask questions and receive directions to were the apples are. They have lots of different types of apples but they all might not be ready to pick or they might be all gone by the time you go to pick them. We were able to get three type on the day that we went while picking from the orchard. The Brareburn, fuji, and granny smith apples. The Fuji apples were up the mountain so wear your sneakers. They had a general store and a small place to get hot dogs, burgers etc. They prices are expensive. The donuts are very yummy. Going down the mountain was way more smoother than up the mountain. I think this is a great experience for children. I enjoyed the trip but not sure I would go again.
o yea beware of the flying bugs that are all over the place and they will land on you.
My family has been making the 2 hours trek from Richmond to Carter Mountain ever since one of my co-workers reccomended it to me 7 years ago. It is well worth the travel time because not only does it provide great farm fun for all of us, but then Dad and I have an excuse to visit Charlottesville afterwards for dinner at one of our favorite places.
The orchard sit atop the mountain and it gives you some amazing, breath-taking views. We like to sit on the "observatory" deck after we're done picking and relax with a refreshing cup or cider and an apple doughnut, which is a MUST HAVE!
They have many varieties of apples there, including pumpkins and wine (they make their own as well) for the grown-ups. Also, they have hay-rides for the entire family for a small fee.
Admission is free and the farm is open until sunset.
Carter Mountain Orchard is a perfect place to make a Fall tradition for a family or with friends! We lived in Richmond for 4 years and would make it to the Orchard every fall to pick apples. The last year we had our 1 month old in tow and it was still enjoyable. Fun for kids especially and a great place for picture opportunities!
We have gone to Carter Mountain Orchard multiple times in the past--as a couple, with a newborn, and with a 3 yo and 1 yo child en tow. It can be crowded but is such a fun, family-friendly festival atmosphere. You can buy apples already picked or you can find a picker (or just climb a tree) and pick your own ...which we highly recommend. It is a difficult trek with a big bulky stroller so I recommend streamlining and/or taking turns with your spouse or family friends. You have several apple types to choose from and they are very organized to help you know where to go to get the type of apple you are looking for. The apple festival is in October and spans 2 wkends, usually during fall leaf color peaks and it is gorgeous. Carter's country store makes the most amazing products and handmade gifts but the bakery is a must see!! Apple pie, the best apple cider in the world, apple cider donuts that'll make you slap your mama and you must also try the apple cookies. All their goodies are tasty goodness and the smell alone will knock you over into a sweet happy oblivion. Highly recommend checking the website if you are looking for a specific kind of apple as they will tell you what is available for picking during each part of the season. Also worth the trip for peaches in summer. This is a yearly trek for our family and a favorite day trip for all of us. Plenty of places to picnic or we often also head down the mountain to Michie's Tavern.
Good for younger kids and toddlers as there is lots of room to run around. Parents will like it for the views of the countryside and the breeze. The store on the top of the mountain sells a variety of foods and crafts, including freshly made apple cider.
We always love going here. We went before we had children and really love going now with our children. It is so fun to pick your own fruit. They always have different kinds of activities going on for every season other than winter. It is fun to go in the fall for pumpkins and to pick apples. We like going in the late summer to pick our own peaches.
Enjoy the fruit of the land and pick your own apples, peaches, nectarines, and pump-kins, or take a hayride around the orchard. You’ll also find cider, apple cider dougnuts, pies, and hand-dipped ice cream as well as handmade crafts and a spectacular view from the picnic-friendly Apple Barn. Open daily, July to Thanksgiving, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
