In the heat of the afternoon in New Mexico, it was wonderful to take the "walk-in" trail at Carlsbad. It was a little steep going, but my kids, 12 and 8, were up for it and had a great time. We saw all kinds of amazing formations and kept cool. The cafe at the bottom was lame, but we managed to find rehydrating drinks and a reasonable snack anyway.
We stopped at Carlsbad Caverns on our way to AZ for Christmas. I have not been there since I was a child and it was just as amazing as I had remembered. You have the option to take a guided tour with the hand held speakers or you can just walk by yourself. They even have a kennel for pets at the Caverns. Very helpful. We will be going back when our children are older.
The Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico are simply amazing. We adore everything about it. Every scene is breathtaking. We even love descending through the "bat entrance" where live bats like to populate. We always end our trip with a quick trip to the underground restaurant! The gift shop is fun too.
nope nope it is not gypsies, it is gypsum. for people that doesn't know, it is the material inside the stalactite and stalagmite (those things that look like teeth growing from the top and bottom of the cave). First of all, no matter how hot is outside under new mexico's sun, do not forget JACKET!! it is cold inside here, it is probably fine for the grown ups, but jacket is highly highly recommended for the kids. be careful because sometimes the floor is slippery. and provide 2-3 hours to explore the cave. if you want to hike down from the batcave (which is more awesome, i quote my niece) 3-4 hour and don't forget water. eventhough it is cold but you still need water and CAMERA!! it is fabulous down there. make sure you have a nice camera which you can arrange to either not using flash or low flash then when you take a picture it will capture the nice natural color. Or if you take a picture with your family members in it, the result will shows the cave also, not just the bright faces that was blinded by the flash.
