What a blast! Took grandma and grandpa on this ride and it was worth all the money. Rode the airboat through the mangroves for a great adventure. Alligators seemed to be everywhere we looked. The wildlife was amazing. Its a bit of a drive from Marco Island but definately worth the effort.
We are so glad we made the choice to take Captain Doug's Everglades Tour.
When you drive into Everglades City and see Captain Doug's on the right, don't stop there. Keep traveling one mile down the road to Captain Doug's on the left. This is their main office and where you purchase your tickets. I think this is inconvenient and confusing, but not too terribly out of the way.
Their website has a coupon and many local tourist coupon booklets have discounts. We paid approximately $75 for two adults and two children. The three-year-old was free. We also had a coupon.
We are a party of five and had our own airboat, along with Captain Matt. I viewed some parties of four being teamed up with parties of two. You just might want to be prepared to ride with strangers.
I have seen an air boat a number of times, but I had never had the chance to ride in one. Wow! It was so much fun! The captain gave us a brief safety overview and gave the kids their required life jackets. As we pulled away from the dock, two pelicans came and hitched a ride with us as we headed out to the mangroves.
The ride is beautiful. You definitely get to see a part of rustic Florida that is sometimes lost in all of the fuss over a state full of amusement parks. Captain Matt took us through long tunnels of mangroves that were covered by trees that actually made it breezy and cool in the middle of August.
As we went through the mangrove and hit an open spot, Matt opened up that baby and we were flying across the water. It is at that point that you cannot help yourself but smile and laugh. The sheer speed is exhilarating. He took us at high speeds and did some doughnuts in the open water. The noise would be loud, but you are furnished with headphones that block out the noise.
He stopped several times in the open water and up popped several alligators. I will admit it is a tad scary to be mere feet away from wild alligators, but it is quite apparent that these gators know the boats and are used to the tourists. While it is discouraged to feed the gators, I have to imagine that there is something going on to make these gators pop up as if on command. I won't question and will just enjoy the pictures we have of them.
The kids had an absolutely blast on the boat ride. While it is pricey, it is a definite must-do and something we are so glad that we did.
