This is a great place for family's!!! We just rented bikes and a bike trailer for our little one and it was so beautiful. We happened to be there in the fall so it was so fun seeing all the foliage. I think this is a must do. It was just so fun to really see cape cod and all its beauty.
Have spend many years biking the Canal with my family. 7 miles on each side. Not too many places to stop in between to get anything to eat. Pack drinks...and remember that your kids have to bike back to where you began. If you start out going WITH the wind, it feels like "smooth sailing" riding back against the wind can be tough on tired legs. Enjoy!
The well-maintained Cape Cod Canal Bike Trail (maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers) is a service road that borders the canal on both banks. The 6.8-mile-long trail along the Cape side is less hilly and further removed from auto traffic than the 7.2-mile-long mainland-side trail.
Families should avoid crossing either bridge with children, either on foot or on bicycle. If you must cross the canal on your bikes, use the Sagamore Bridge (its sidewalk is safer), and don’t ride—walk. Because the bridges’ auto lanes are so narrow, drivers aren’t looking out for pedestrians or bikers—they’re avoiding cars in adjacent lanes.
Kids get a charge out of following the ships up close from the bike path as they go through the canal on their way to the open sea.
