An 80-passenger cable car brings visitors to the 4,080-foot summit of Cannon Mountain in under ten minutes. On a clear day, you can see the mountains of four states and Canada! At the summit, you'll find scenic walking paths, a 360 degree observation deck, a cafeteria, bar and restrooms.
We have taken a ride on the tram, which the tram operators refer to as Ketchup and Mustard (red and yellow) several times. The scenery on the ride is beautiful especially in the fall. If the weather is cold enough you can even see rime ice, which looks like snow near the top of Cannon. The tram is a large car which I would guess holds about 40 people. It is for standing only, however there are a few seats near each end. There are poles to hold onto for sudden stops and wobbly feet. The ride must be very well publicized outside the US because we have ridden with people from England, Germany, Canada and Spain. You stand for the entire ride and once at the top you can enjoy the view from a fire tower if you want to climb some stairs. I suggest you pack a lunch, wear sturdy shoes and take a walk along the hiking trails when you get to the top. You are not assigned a ride down so you can ride at any time, just don't miss the last ride as it is a far and treacherous hike down. Also, some of the trails have sheer cliffs so carry your toddlers in appropriate backpacks and hold the hands of little ones. You never know what is just ahead, but there are some great spots for snapping a picture.
Once you return to the bottom there is an interesting ski museum which reviews the skiing history of the area as well as some old trams to ponder over!
