"Fantastic Family Fun!"

We absolutely loved Cannon Beach and it's sleepy little town.
The beach is so big that there is so much space, even in the middle of summer. Our children had a blast flying kites, digging and swimming and watching horses.
The town itself doesn't have a real grocery store, just an expensive corner store, so definitely buy groceries on your way there. We made most of our meals in our cabin, but had clam chowder at a local restaurant.
We found it warm enough to swim in August, but it can be quite windy too.
The trek to haystack rock is fun and we found the beach was easy for our stroller.

"Great beach on the Oregon Coast"

If you have seen the movie 'The Goonies' you have seen this beach.  It is home to the Haystack Rocks that they spy through the special piece the kids find with the map.  This beach is one of our favorites to go to.

We like to park in the public parking lot next to Mo's (I recommend stopping in for lunch!  Great sea food and I recommend the Cannon Ball...clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl.  YUM!!!).  In the lot you have bathrooms and a shower to rinse off your feet after your walk.  You also don't have to deal with all of the traffic in town (and can walk along the beach to downtown Cannon Beach).  When you walk down the stairs you can go either left or right...there is lots of beach either direction.  You will likely see kite boarders out enjoying the surf in this area too.

We like to walk towards Haystack Rock.  You don't realize how big it is until you are standing in it's shadow.  Once you get here a whole world of exploration opens up...especially when the tides are out.  The tide pools at the base of the rock are home to lots of friends (like star fish, anemones, and crabs).  We love wandering around and finding things to look at.  We also like to jump from rock to rock (an older kid game, for sure!).

This stretch of beach is also fantastic for kite flying (there is lots of real estate!).

After a walk on the beach, be sure to go into town and have a wander.  There are some adorable shops, a fantastic candy store where you can see salt water taffy being pulled (I recall it being named Bruce's Candy Shop), and there is ice cream of course!

The beach in Oregon (at least Northern Oregon) is not considered warm by most (you will see native Oregonians out there in swimsuits on nice days), but it is one of the most beautiful places.  Also, careful of ripe tides and the undertow if you decide to go in the water.  The water is actually warmer in the winter than it is in the summer due to the currents changing directions with the seasons.

All of Oregon's beaches are public land (although paths to the beach may be private).  They were reserved for the people of Oregon and their visitors by Gov. Tom McCall in the 60s.  What a wonderful gift he gave us!  Make sure you check it out!
