This waterfront street is the site of the now defunct sardine canning factories. Very popular with families, it houses the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium along with several stores, restaurants and hotels.
Cannery Row was the setting of John Steinbeck's novels Cannery Row (1945) and Sweet Thursday (1954). Both were the basis for the 1982 movie Cannery Row, starring Nick Nolte and Debra Winger. It is also mentioned in Bob Dylan's song Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands.
Cannery Row is the street that ends with the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and it is a fun street filled with shops and restaurants. There are several kid-friendly toy and souvenir shops, and we love a trip to Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory for a chocolate shake and a slice of Sharky's Pizza across the street. When the line is long at the Aquarium, we have passed some time and waited it out by shopping and eating. Bubba Gumps is right here, a few major scenic outlook points, and some good little restaurants. Can be a major tourist trap, just so you know!
My family and I spent sometime here after vising the Monterey Bay aquarium. Just walking up and down the row is so much fun. There's so much shops to explore. My 3 yr old daughter loved the Pink store with all the Hello Kitty stuff and you can't miss Ghirardelli store for the ice crean sundae.
We always include a walk down Cannery Row in our trips to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Usually we find some lunch in one of the restaurants, and we always stop at Toll House or Ghirardelli for a scrumptious treat. There are shops galore, with something for every budget, a newish Imax theater, walking/biking trails along the coast, and beautiful scenery. Parking can be both tough to find and expensive. The earlier you arrive, the easier it will be to find parking and the less crowded the area will be.
We love Cannery Row. We like to drive up for the day, have lunch at Bubba Gumps, go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, go shopping and then get Ghirradeli Ice Cream. the shops are pretty cute and there are lots of pirate stores which the kids love. It is an amazing little place that is worth the trip.
Cannery Row has got to be one of the most fun places to see. With unique shops, galleries and museums all within walking distance. You can go whale watching, beach combing, squish a penny, get a great meal, buy some souvenirs, and make some great family memories!
This is a fun oceanfront strip with the Monterey Bay Aquarium (DON'T MISS" on one end and lots of fun shops and restaurants in between. We spent the morning at the museum and then walked along the ocean, stopping by at the Nestle shop for some piping hot, fresh chocolate cookies. Lots of fun little trinket shops to browse and restaurants to choose from. A fun day trip for any family.
