Camp Richardson's Mountain Sports Center offers family-friendly cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in South Lake Tahoe. Equipment rentals include sizes for kids to adults. Trailers for parents are also available for children to ride along. Miles of groomed trails through wooded areas.
For young children as young as 3 or 4, trying cross-country skiing for the first time the 1 mile loop close to the Mountain Sports Center is perfect. Mostly flat and well groomed. Parking can be challenging. Ask for a permit to avoid being towed if you have to park across the street near the hotel.
The Camp Richardson Mountain Sports center is THE place for families to go cross-country skiing and snowshoeing together in South Lake Tahoe. Pick up rentals at the Mountain Sports Center for kids as young as 3-4 years old. They even have "trailers" for mom or dad to pull behind if you have little ones too young to give cross-country skiing a try for themselves.
During the winter time, Camp Richardson's campground goes into hibernation and the wooded camping area is transformed into a series of groomed trails along what would normally be their bike paths. The cross-country trails loop through tall pine trees. On the day we were there, the sun was out, filtering through the snow laden trees. It was so quiet, we could hear the wood pecker tapping the trees. It was simply magical.
For younger kids, there is a short 1 mile loop that is mostly flat. Our four year old was able to make it around in about 45 minutes. It was her first time cross-country skiing so we took lots of breaks and played in the snow. I loved that we were all out exploring together in nature.
The Mountain Sports Center also rents snowshoes of all sizes if you prefer to snowshoe. But the trails were so well groomed, we could have easily walked around in snow boots. It was a lovely day, and there were no lines even on a Sunday. The staff was helpful, but not as warm and friendly as I was expecting. I'm not entirely sure why, but it just struck me as a little odd.
The general store on the other side of Hwy 89 serves breakfast and sandwiches for lunch if you want to pack a picnic along for your day in the woods.
Thank you Camp Richardson for inviting and hosting our family to experience cross-country skiing in your beautiful woods. As always, these opinions are entirely my own.
