Since September 1941, Camp Lejeune has been the home of “Expeditionary Forces in Readiness”, and throughout the years, it has become the home base for the II Marine Expeditionary Force, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Logistics Group and other combat units and support commands.
I am writing this for people who may be coming to Camp Lejeune to visit someone stationed here, I happen to live here! If you are visiting the base with Children here are a few things I reccomend, ONSLOW BEACH! The beach here on base is nice because it is not over crowded and it is clean! Consider having your service member give you a short tour of base, there are some neat things to be seen if you look, tanks and such! There is also a bowling alley and base theater that kids might enjoy! Overall there is not a lot for kids here, but there are a few things families can enjoy!
Jacksonville is home to Camp Lejeune, a 110,000-acre U.S. Marine Corps base. There aren’t any formal tourist attractions on the base, but you can get a glimpse of how the Marines live and work by visiting the site.
You’ll need to present a valid driver’s license, automobile registration, and proof of insurance at the information center on Highway 24 to be admitted onto the base.
You’ll want to take the kids to the Beirut Memorial, located just east of the camp on US 17. The large granite memorial was built in honor of the 273 American Marines, sailors, and soldiers who were killed in the 1983 attack on the U.S. barracks in Lebanon.
Along Lejeune Boulevard, each Bradford pear tree represents the loss of one life from U.S. involvement in Lebanon and in the 1983 U.S.-led invasion of Grenada. For more information about the base’s self-guided tour, call (910) 451–7426.
