This is something that if you blink, you will miss it! But if you are able to figure out where it is located and take the time to stop, it is an experience to see! It is fun to stop at a place and be able to "make your mark" and this is a place that allows that. Most people bring spray paint or something like that so they can write a message on one of the cars. Fun place for a unique photo oppurtunity and well as a place to stop and stretch your legs for a bit.
The only downside is that people leave their garbage, spray paint cans and bottles, spread all over everywhere. It is disappointing to see such a mess.
This iconic Route 66 stopping point is a great free stop for families. Commisioned by Stanley Marsh 3, the Ant Farm created this in the 1960s as a living sculpture. This sculpture is featured in the Pixar 'Cars' film (look at the mountain range the next time you watch it).
You're encouraged to climb, write, and spray paint the Cadillacs - leaving your mark on the art. Kids will enjoy the wide open field the 'Ranch' is in and the short walk. Perfect photo opportunity as you travel the mother road! Don't be surprised if you're surrounded by a herd of cattle while you look around.
I have to admit, most people thought we were crazy for being excited about going to Texas, but it's just somewhere I always wanted to go.
Sadly, my first impression of Texas may not have lived up to my expectations....
It was so HOT and dry and dusty and not that I didn't expect it, but I guess I was expecting to see ranches right away.....
And then.... we did!
In the distance, I saw this formation on the side of the road and as we got closer I started to yell and tell Russ to pull over.
"I know what that is! We HAVE to go there!"
The Cadillac Ranch!
I had first heard about the Cadillac Ranch on a TLC special about the Duggars ( http://www.advancedmedical.tv/shows/otr.htm) traveling cross country (on a trip very similar to ours) and they had stopped at the ranch and decorated the Cadillacs and as soon as I saw it, I knew we needed to stop too :)
I'll admit, it may not seem like much... it's a bunch of Cadillacs buried in the middle of a field on a farm, but there is something so cool and artsy (and maybe a bit iconic) that my kids were in love and excited to pose by the cool old cars and decorate them.
(be sure to bring a can of spray paint with you!)
We finally found some spray paint that worked (there were bottles all over the ground. Kind-of sad really.) and we left our mark on Amarillo, Texas ;)
