Cabin John Regional Park offers a variety of activities including a miniature train ride, hiking trails, and ice skating. Be sure to check the calender for upcoming concerts and events.
This is definitely the playground to hit on a hot summer day.
A large playground is surrounded by large, old trees that provide lots of shade but still let breezes through. There are several play areas to explore, with lots of equipment for climbing, crawling, sliding, etc. The terrain is quite hilly, so make sure you wear good shoes. And remember to bring your bug repellent -- creepy crawlies like the shade, too.
A highlight of the trip for us is always the miniature train. It runs through the wooded area around the playground and into the larger park and trails beyond. The trip is just long enough for everyone to enjoy, and if you look carefully, you may spot some wildlife along the way. On our last ride, we saw a baby deer near the tracks! Tickets are a bargain at $1.75 each (kids under 2 ride free with a paying adult). You can save even more by buying a book of 10 for $15.75 with no expiration date.
Ample free parking and clean, simple restrooms are near the playground. Plenty for an afternoon of fun.
This park is incredible. It’s huge, with several gigantic play areas for children, but the coolest part of this place is the miniature train. The train is a replica of a 1863 C.P. Huntington, a steam locomotive purchased by the Southern Pacific Railroad and named in honor of the president of the Southern Pacific Company. The train travels around the perimeter of the park and is about a 10 or 15 minute ride; children absolutely love it, and if they’re lucky, they can see deer or other small animals scurrying around in the woods as they ride. When the train is closed during the winter, little ones can throw on some ice-skates and skate around the indoor ice rink.
This hike is great for elementary school children in that it provides some elevation challenges along the ridge overlooking the Cabin John Creek. There are some great natural play areas, such as a bamboo forest, a couple of rocky beaches, some large rockes to climb, and a playground and picnic tables at the trail head.
