"Historic Ride"

I have to admit I was more excited about the mule-drawn boat ride than my son was. But when we were done, he had to admit it was pretty cool. You get to see how the workers (all dressed in period costume) do the tricky steering through the locks and the handsome mules pull you slowly along. The tour guide on the boat was engaging and informative.
We happened to go when on a 99-degree day, and we made the last ride for that day (around 11 in the morning), because they have to cancel boat tours if the weather gets too extreme. The boat tours are seasonal, so check the website.

"A fun ride for little ones"

The C&O canal runs through georgetown and there is a short but extremely entertaining ride along a short portion in an historic mule drawn barge.  The ticket office is a little hard to find but walk from M street down either 30th or jefferson - then along the canal (signs are posted).  The park ranger who run the tour are in historic costumes and they have a wonderful storytelling narrative that will appeal to kids.  For little ones they have a bucket of period toys to keep them entertained.  For older ones there are lots of interactive moments.  The park rangers are wonderful at involving the kids and have lots of hands on pieces to demonstrate the locks.  The mules are a hit for little ones.    Afterwards head back up to M street for lots of dining choices - we suggest icecream at one of several ice cream stores.
