Hundreds of pets and their owners dressed in outrageous and fanciful costumes are expected to take part in the sixth annual Burlingame Pet Parade on Broadway on Saturday, September 26, 2009, beginning at 10 a.m.
Not worth a special trip, but if you happen to be close by, this is a fun thing to check out. People in the neighborhood dress up their pets (mostly dogs, but I've seen turtles, birds, cats, rabbits, and even lizards) and parade them down Broadway Avenue. Like larger parades, there are marching bands, but unlike larger parades, if you miss something the first time around, you don't have to worry because everyone walks the parade route twice.
We went to this when my son was 1. It was a great introduction to parades for him. And because the crowd is very manageable, it wasn't too much of a sensory overload for him.
This is an annual event hosted by Burlingame that always brings a smile to our two small children. There's no shortage of lunch locations and ice cream stores along Broadway. But my fun is fully realized when I see how much fun my children have looking at all of the pets and their zany owners dressed in nutty costumes parading up Broadway. It's a small event that we bundle with a small picnic of snacks and sandwiches for our kids to enjoy during the parade. It is exactly the right duration for our children to have fun and coincidentally timed to end right before nap time. My kids get a thrill from this. I thoroughly enjoy their smiles.
