"First Capital of the Colony"

After you visit Orton Plantation Gardens, head to the Brunswick Town State Historic Site, just a few minutes away. Brunswick Town was the first capital of the colony of North Carolina and was a leading seaport during most of the eighteenth century.

When you visit the museum at the site, you will see various artifacts and exhibits excavated from the remains of the original buildings, which were burned to the ground by the British in 1776.

You’ll also see the earthworks of Fort Anderson, built to help keep the Cape Fear River open for Civil War blockade runners, who shipped supplies to Confederate forces. It fell in 1865 during a fierce battle that also collapsed several other area forts. Markers have been erected to explain the history of the area.
