The Park is a great weekend getaway in itself. With hiking trails, mountain bike trails, a Nature Center that has programming all year round, outlook towers, and beautiful scenery, its a great place for kids to run around, explore, and feel like they are far from home. In late Spring, Summer, and Fall – the State Park has its Saddle Barns open for guided Horseback Riding and an olympic sized pool. One entrance to the Park is Indiana's oldest covered bridge, a very rare 2-lane covered bridge. It is also home to some great Brown County events including:
Morel Mushroom Festival (May 5)
DINO Trail Run and Mountain Bike Race (June 3)
Midwest Women's Mountain Bike Clinic (June 9-10)
Brown County Breakdown (October)
Haunted Trails (October)
Brown County state park is great almost anytime of the year, but for hoosiers it is the fall color that gets them excited. The park is a golden sea and the views of the hils are just magnificant (especially as we are so used to corn and bean fields on laser flat plains). The park is very crowded during the fall but well worth the trip and best if you can make it on a week day. Nearby in Nashville is the typical tourist trap offerings of overpriced primitive crafts and small cafes. A picnic in the park is the best choice for families. There are plenty of walks to choose from - including some wheelchair/stroller friendly walks through to some very strenuous hikes up and down the hillsides. There are also horse trails through the park and spotting the ponies is a great diversion for little ones. The nature center is small but has some useful guides to trees and wildlife. Be sure to look out for the ranger programs as these are usually very well done. We went to one on wild birds with several real live raptors as part of the talk. The handlers brought the birds up very close so all our kids got a good, up close experience.
This is a great park for a family day. There are plently of picnic shelters, walking trails, and nature adventures. There is also horseback riding. You can also rent a cabin which is great! We saw deer, lots of small critters, and a small black bear! It was an experience none of will ever forget. It is especially beautiful in the fall when the leaves are turning colors. The town on Nashville also has lots of old shops and you can get old time ice cream, drinks, and candy. Lots of fun for the whole family.
