"A beautiful way to spend a day! Excellent tour!"

Our son learned a ton while the entire family had a great time on this totally wholesome, radical river trip!

The Scoop: This is really the only way to go when you want to experience the Stikine River. If you aren’t a local, and you do not have any equipment (think JET boat, not just a skiff) then you’ll want to hook up with a tour operator to show you how locals have fun! The Stikine River is a popular hang-out for local families, couples, and even for high school seniors during their “Senior Skip Day.” Breakaway Adventures’ Stikine Dream gives guests great visibility without sacrificing comfort.

The trip lasts from about 9 in the morning until 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Times can vary. They provide bug spray if you’re going to “the tubs” – the place is well known for healthy mosquito populations but it is well worth it for a dip! (The bugs don’t bother those that are submerged!)

Tips: If you have a kiddo life jacket that works well, you can bring it. They DO outfit the kids in the group too, but you’re allowed to keep your own on board if you’d like. Bottle water is provided but you’ll want to bring a lunch and snacks since it’s a day trip. There is no bathroom aboard, so be aware of this. They DO however stop at a cabin along the way AND the hot tubs have restrooms.

The bottom line: We had a blast and were able to see extreme, awe-inspiring beauty that was profound enough to inspire John Muir’s musings as well as glacial waters, icebergs, natural hot spring-fed hot tubs, forest service cabins and even a glacier quite close. Our son who was three-and-a-half at the time had a blast and even caught a cat nap on the way back to Wrangell. The guides are well-versed in “reading the river” and usually have grown up doing so at their parents’ knee. We’d book this same trip again – it was so incredible you could do it annually and never tire of the scenery!

The company also offers a slough of other tours and services, like a water taxi (serving nearby Petersburg) and watercraft rentals.

Disclosure: My family received complimentary passage aboard the Stikine Dream for our day of river adventures. All opinions are our own.
