Located in Perry County near New Bloomfield, this isolated 10-acre tract contains a rare colony of box huckleberry, which is a single plant estimated to be 1,300 years old. There is an interpretive trail at the site.
Just a few miles south of Little Buffalo State Park and technically part of Tuscarora State Forest, on Route 34 is the Box Huckleberry Natural Area, a special reserve for a box huckleberry plant estimated to be 1,300 years old. A short interpretive nature trail around the area is a favorite of small children. This is a good place to teach your kids about the importance of preserving our natural resources. Trail maps and a written history of the plant are available on-site.
