Some 30 years ago, "Papa Steve," Boudin's owner and master baker, opened the first retail demonstration bakery on Fisherman's Wharf. As far as bakeries go, this is a large bakery with conveyor belts and lots of moving objects that kids will find interesting. As far a museums go, it isn't one that will take up too much of your day. But one thing is for sure whether you stop to pick up a bowl of chowder in a San Francisco Soughdough bowl, or you have a full meal in the Bistro, if you come to San Francisco, you've got to have at least a slice of sourdough bread. This incorporates some educational fun with a gastronomic event.
The bakery has a 30-foot observation window that lets you see the team of experts crafting batches of bread by hand. It's hard to resist getting a loaf.
If you are interested, Boudin at Fisherman's Wharf also has a Museum & Bakery Tour where they invite you to witness history in the baking. Stroll through our collection of historic and interactive exhibits as you observe the bakery in action from the museum’s floor-to-ceiling window walls and glass-walled catwalk. A meal at the Bistro entitles you to a free tickets for the tour that can be used the same day or the next day.
As you stand in front of their window, you can ask the bakers some questions as they are preparing the dough to be shaped as a crab, a crocodile, turtles and other critters. You can even go into the bakery and buy one of their goodies. There is a museum upstairs but we did not visit it, we felt that the price of admission may not be worth it, it looked small.
A great place to warm up! We had a great time looking at all the animal shaped sourdough loaves while we waited for our table. The clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl was delicious! If you don't have time to wait for lunch, definitely stop in and check out the factory and various loaves of bread - it's worth it, if for nothing but the smells!
Boudin's is a great place to stop for lunch if you're on the pier. They are famous for their sourdough bread and it smells amazing! When you enter the bakery, you can see dozens of different types of bread, some of which are even sculpted into animals! Those are really fun for the kids to see. Our family got soup in sourdough bread bowls and we all loved it! They also have sandwiches, desserts, etc. They also have a tour, but we didn't have time to go on it.
Fisherman's Wharf is teeming with activity of all sorts....musicians, moon walkers and a variety of entertainers. It's a GREAT way to spend an afternoon. Top it all off with Lunch at BOUDIN'S. We had the clam chowder in Sourdough Bread Bowls. Simply YUM! Try it on your next visit...YOU'LL LOVE IT!
Every time we take a trip to San Francisco we make a stop at boudin bakery. My boys 2 and 4 love to get the turtle shaped sour dough loaf. It is a little expensive for a small loaf of bread however. You can get the same sized loaf with out the shape for a couple dollars less but still worth it for the experience. You can also watch them make the bread from the window which is fun.
We toured Boudin Sourdough Factory on our visit to San Francisco and we loved the informative free tour (and samples!) as well as dining in the cafe. The sour dough bread bowl with clam chowder was delicious! The tour is short but very fun and informative and something that people of all ages would enjoy.
Enjoy fresh clam chowder in a bread bowl and truly get a taste of San Francisco! The cafe has a really yummy menu and the place is big enough to accommodate all of the tourists that come streaming in. YUM YUM! The restaurant is inside the large bakery where you can watch how its all done.Great food, great bread, great scenery and surroundings
Not sure if there's sometimes more displays as far as tours, but it doesn't seem like it. The bread is delicious though for sure! They make all sorts of fun shapes and the kids loved picking out a bear to take back and eat later. They have a restaurant as well, though we didn't eat there, it seemed good.
Boudin's Bakery is a must stop everytime we are in San Francisco. We love the fresh breads and Clam Chowder. For some reason, eating clam chowder in a bread bowl tastes better. We even load up and tote bread home, YUM. Don't miss the unique bread creations too. The children will get a kick, our did.
This place has great food. The sourdough bread is delicious and they bake it into all sorts of interesting shapes such as fish, whales and crabs. The kids will be entertained looking at these items, any bakers in the family will enjoy looking at the cooking gadgets and people who like seafood will love the clam chowder in a sourdough bowl. The only drawback is if you don't like sourdough bread then there is not a lot to eat but there is still a ton to look at.
This place has the BEST bread! The atmosphere is fantastic. You have a view of the water while you eat a great fully loaded sandwich or a clam chowed bread bowl. Right in the heart of Fishermans warf.
The resturant is the perfect place to being children... casual, but great food!
I often recommend that visitors from out of town stop here for bite to eat, or just for a few minutes to watch the bread making process. My kids especially love watching the bakers at the demonstration bakery. Sourdough bread is one of the things that San Francisco is known for, so this is a must see for foodies. In fact, SF 49er football fans have even been known to wear sourdough on their heads at games in response to those who adorn their heads with cheese. Grab a clam chowder filled sourdough bread bowl and that's about all you need for a hearty lunch. The downstairs is more of a casual dining area and is called Boudin Cafe. The upstairs Boudin Bistro is more of a sit down dining experience. A dinner at the bistro can make for a good date.
When I take visitors into San Francisco, I make the go to Boudin, probably because I LOVE it!! This is kid friendly and great food. You can sample their amazing, one of a kind sourdough bread or their famous clam chowder. You can have both in a bread bowl, as well! For light eaters, their salads are delicious. For the kids, they have great grill cheese (on sourdough, of course) and traditional soups. You will LOVE this place after an afternoon of walking around the wharf!
We like to come here because not only does my husband love the bread, but my daughter loves to watch the bread being made in the window and she follows them traveling in baskets along the ceiling. We all love the clam chowder in a bread bowl of course and Peet's is there too! It's a nice place to stop for lunch.
