George Boldt rose from humble beginnings to become, among other things, theowner of New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Wealthy and passionately in love with his wife, Louise, he ordered a 120-room, six-story Rhineland-style castle to be built as a summer home. The finest craftspeople in the world were called in, hearts were carved and painted everywhere, and the island itself was even shaped into a heart. Then one day in 1904 a telegram arrived, telling the workers to stop construction. Louise had died suddenly, and George was so heartbroken he never returned to his fairy-tale island again. Restoration was begun in 1977. The Boldt Yacht House, with three antique boats, has been completely restored and is accessible by a
Boldt castle is a wonderful place to visit. It sits on an island in the St. Lawrence River. You have to take a boat ride out to the island for the tour. The castle itself is a little piece of history. It was never completely finished but that is part of it's charm. The story we were told was that a man build it for the love of his life only to have her pass away before it's completion. It is one of those places that it is really fun to imagine living at. The massive structure, private island and romantic story makes for a unique experience.
My family recently visited Alexandria Bay and the 1000 islands region and enjoyed ourselves. We took a large paddle boat tour that was a lot of fun and made our way to Boldt Castle. It was a very lovely island that it is located on and is an interesting historic landmark. There isn't much for young children to do but it was a very enjoyable day trip nonetheless!
