The trail is slated to one day join Avila Beach with San Luis Obispo, but currently only spans 1.5 miles through a wooded area and golf course en route towards the ocean.
The Bob Jones trail is fantastic! It starts in the Riparian area in San Luis Obispo and travels down through the Avila Beach Golf Resort and drops off at Avila Beach.
The first portion of the trail is a two-lane bike path with lots of giant sycamore and maple tree coverage. My son enjoyed seeing the squirrels and birds.
As the trail meets up with the golf course, it widens into the width of a two-lane road for cars. It winds along the creek giving plenty of views of the water fowl and fish jumping for their meals.
As you approach Avila Beach, there is a great park complete with a pirate ship on your right. And, then about 100 yard later, a set of swings and a slide on the sand.
Avila has public restrooms, great beach front restaurants, and a pier to explore before your return trip to the parking lot.
This route was friendly to walkers, runners and cyclists. I never felt uncomfortable or unwanted as a family. The others using the trail were respectful. My 2 year old even got out and ran a 1/2 mile of the trail with no problems.
This trail is a great way to get your family outdoors and off the beaten path. It is paved, so you can use bikes, strollers, etc., or just go for a walk. This trail starts inland and you can take it all the way to Avila beach, where you'll find lots to do and places to eat. It's a 3 mile walk/hike/bike to the beach.
This is one of our FAVORITE places to escape the heat!!! Nothing beats the beautiful walking trail with the ocean breeze and then ending at the beach!! Make sure to stop at Blazing Blenders for an amazing smoothie and take your beach toys to play at the beach. There is also a fun spot called Avila Valley Barn that is great for the kids - there is a petting zoo and fresh fruit/veggies. Have fun!
We are so fortunate to live 15 min. from this amazing town of Avila Beach...then the town in stirring wtih tourists or there is fog looming at the beach, the Bob Jones Trail is a great bridge between the to. This path meanders along the San Luis Obispo creek, passes by some amazing country side. Be sure and take a detour to the Woodstone Deli off the path for some yummy sandwiches. During the fall months wild stealhead trouts are seeing running down the stream...this is a flat paved path for the average person to stroll, ride or run for some fresh air fun..take the kiddos there is a park along the way to stop and play for while.
My husband and children (in the stroller or bike trailer) frequent this trail almost weekly during the summer months. It's shaded most of the way, and strictly for pedestrians, no motor vehicles allowed! it's about 2.5 miles one way from the Ontario rd parking lot to the Avila beach, where you can enjoy great food/gift shops, the beach and a great playground. Bring water for the walk!
This trail is amazing! You park at the trail head parking lot near Highway 101, and you can walk all the way to Avila Beach. The entire trail is paved and it's wide, so you can hike, bike, stroll, or jog. There is plenty of room for a double jogger and there's even a small play area about 1/2 way. The only downside is that I don't think there are any bathrooms along the trail, so for the little ones, make sure they've emptied their bladders before leaving. Once you've reached the beach, there are restrooms, restaurants, the beach and so much to do. It's a great way to extend your trip to the beach! :)
The Bob Jones Trail winds from Hwy 101 to Avila Beach through oak trees and is a beautiful trail. From the parking area near Hwy 101 to Avila Beach and back is over 5 miles, so if you have a way to push or carry your kids, it is a wonderful way to get some exercise. The kids can also have fun walking or riding bikes along part or all of the trail. The trail passes by Woodside Market, which has a doggy drinking station and tasty treats. You can park there as well if you want to start the trail further down. I do not recommend this trail for adult bike riders who want to do anything but coast. There are so many pedestrians, you cannot actually get any exercise on a bike.
The Bob Jones City to the Sea trail it so amazing. It is a paved trail so it accomadates all forms of exercise. You can push a stroller, go for a bike ride, run, walk, skateboard... There is a playground part of the way down that is technically part of the condos near by but everyone uses it since it is on the main trail. There is a lot of shade which is nice because it can get pretty warm during the summer. the scenery is unbeatable, going from the forest to the golf course to the beach.
