Just south of the shopping district on US 321 you can learn how the town got its name at the Blowing Rock, where it snows upside down. The attraction is a large rock formation hanging over John’s River Gorge. Plan to spend about an hour or so enjoying the views and walking the ridges and rock, as you discover the story of this mysterious formation.
Legend says that a Cherokee brave who had thrown himself off the Blowing Rock was blown up out of the gorge to the Chickasaw maiden who had prayed for his return for three days. Today light objects thrown from the rock will be blown back up.
