Small but free automotive museum with some interesting old cars
Blackhawk is a museum for kids of all ages. The car collection is incredible and extensive. Cars from all over the world and time periods. There are cars that will bring back memories to all visitors. A replica of Karl Benz' first motorwagen to experimental cars. But that's not all. The Museum has antique juke boxes and gas pumps on display. There is a working signal light. For the younger members of your group there is the Discovery Room. This is a hands-on free exploration activity room that is focused on "Transportaion" right now but soon it will be transformed into "Trainland" to go along with the European Train Enthusiasts model train exhibit. This is a great time to visit the ETE has a HO scale set up that is incredible with at least four trains running at anytime. There is a smaller set up , made by one of their wives that is a replica of the village of her childhood at Christmas time. The Discovery Room is filled with hands on activities for children age one to one hundred.
The Blackhawk Museum is undoubtedly a stunning and historic museum, but definitely not on my list of family-friendly destinations. I had considered taking my school-aged auto buff son to the museum, but first attended the museum myself, as a guest at an upscale wedding. I was relieved that I hadn't brought my son along.
The gleaming marble floors of the galleries and high sheen of the priceless automobiles will impress the adults in your group, but they scream 'don't touch' to any parent. And this is, indeed, an exceedingly hands off museum. This is all about 'look, don't touch', and all but the most devoted junior car fanatics will get fidgety and bored after ten minutes. The collections emphasize the historical, not the 'hey mom, that's awesome!' variety of vehicle, so unless you have a miniature history buff on your hands, many of the cars will seem like oddities.
Spare yourself the $10 per person admission, and simply enjoy the fancy Shops at Blackhawk and the fountains on the plaza of the museum. Wait there, or do some shopping, while the OTHER kid in your family (that would be your husband) goes in and gawks at the old Rolls Royces.
The place is very elegant with its black marble floors, and the cars are almost like added decorations. classic cars. like the lower level area where they had my favorites the Woody, Chevelle, Corvette. But there was this Thunderbird or Fairlane that had the prettiest Candy Apple Red color Upstairs were the Giants! Old school heavy metal! Those cars were enormous and I can't imagine what the mileage would be. I was amazed at how skinny some of those wheels were with the amount of car sittingon them! There was an all wooden one that was pretty sweet and one that was either brass or rose gold color that was pretty nice!
For auto buffs, there are four exhibition galleries, an Automotive Reference Library & Museum Store. Kids can also enjoy the water fall/fountain and grounds in front of the building. Free for children under 6 and military personnel. It is near Mt. Diablo State Park and the vineyards of Livermore.
