Take a wild ride on a runaway train through the desert canyons and rickety mines. There is a reason why Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is "the wildest ride in the wilderness!".
Minimum height: 40"
We love Big Thunder. My husband and I are not into roller coaster like we used to be when we were younger, but we enjoy this one. We brought our son on this one when he was tall enough at the age of seven and he also liked it. We went on it a few times to break up the monotony of the younger Disneyland attractions at that time. He's a little older now, but he still likes the ride. It's one of our favorites (next to Space Mountain).
I have two four year olds. One of them LOVES this ride and the other one thinks it is way to scary. The ride is similar to a roller coaster and does have some dark spots so if your child is not much of a thrill seeker, you might want to skip it. But if you have a kid with a need for speed, this might end up being their favorite ride as well.
Fun tip: when you are climbing up one of the hills during the ride, look out for a goat on the right hand side. Keep your eyes fixed on the goat for as long as possible and as the ride makes a quick turn, you will get one of those classic "whoosh" feelings inside your stomach. So much fun!
My older kids, 9 and 7, both went on this ride at least 4 times on their birthday. It was their absolute favorite. As an adult, I find myself thrilled every time the roller coaster drops and I'm lifted up off of my seat. I can't help but join in and lift my hands and just have such fun with my boys. It's one of the funnest things I've done with my kids! We still like to say (even in the car), "Hold onto your hats and glasses folks, cause this here's the wildest ride in the wilderness!"
I have such fond memories of riding this as a child and now taking my own kids on as well.
The line times tend to be a bit tricky, but there is a fastpass available that gets you on the ride in about 5-10 minutes.
Since there aren't too many "thrill" rides at Disney, this one is one of the favorites for a bolder type of child. My 5-year-old likes the feature that lets her ride in between two adults in the car; she feels extra secure that way!
Disney does such a great job theming this ride; it is a complete package!
