The Big E is HUGE! If you go on the weekends, be prepared for large crowds. If that doesn't phase you, it truly is a great place to go with lots to see. There are the state buildings, as well as livestock, a carnival area, and booths and booths of foods, crafts, and other treats. Yes, you will spend some money here for admission and to eat and do activities.
This place is HUGE! There are so many people it's difficult to keep an eye on you kids if they are able to run about. It's expensive to park, expensive to eat, expensive to go on rides, but you can get some good deals on other things. There are many buildings to visit, one for each state in New England, and it's different every year. The hard part is finding the time to go to them all! A must see is the Clydesdale horses that pull the old fashioned fire truck. And don't forget to get a picture of your little one near the gentle, giant horses!
The Big E is a huge event here in New England, and with hardly good reason. Every year the price of admission increases, as does parking, ride tickets/wristbands and the vendor fare.
My husband grew up visiting this fair every year, but the year our youngest turned 3, we decided to stop going. Local, town-based New England fairs are really no different from the Big E, unless size and overpriced ticketing is your thing. There has also been an increase of commercial traffic - the kind you would expect at a home and garden show. It detracts from the true spirit of a country fair and is just tacky, really.
The Big E Fair is a huge fair. It concompasses the whole length of Memorial Avenue. Good for kids of all ages!! My daughter loved the many amusement park rides she can ride on her own and my husband enjoyed all the different stands that provided different foods. Make sure you plan at least a day to be able to see everything. The little stalls that sell all different kinds of goods, housed in the big buildings are open year around but the rides are active only in the summer months. You definitely have to stop and sample the eclairs and cream puffs that are made special there!! They were so yummy!! One downfall, there is admission AND you have to purchase tickets to ride the rides and you also have to pay for parking. Also tickets are sold if you watch a performance there so nothing is free except for the daily and Mardis Gras parade.
