The Bergen County Zoological Park is located in the Van Saun County Park. This zoo has birds, snakes, alligators, bison, foxes, lions and many more animals.
Come to Van Saun Park Zoo in the spring and summer for free fun for all kids. There are playgrounds a'plenty and a train and even a merry go round for amusement. A snack shack has food to provide sustenance for a whole day of fun. Come see the animals or play in the fields, a great space for family.
While the zoo at Van Saun is no comparison to the Bronx Zoo as far as size goes, when it's in season, they have some fun animals for the little ones to see. During season the entrance fee is inexpensive; off season, it's free entry. Parking is always free. What makes this Zoo great is that it's part of a large County Park. So, when you're done walking the zoo, you can take your kiddos on a train ride, the carousel or across the parking lot to the park area. The park area has a few different sized jungle gyms from little tykes to toddlers to kids. There's room for all ages. And plenty of picnic seating also.
If you are looking for something to do outdoors on a nice warm day, look no further than a trip to Van Saun Park. Growing up in New Jersey, this was the fun spot families visitied that offers great picnicing and a small zoo. There are other attractions, such as pony rides, a bug exhibit, and train ride. (There is a fee for these, but entrance to the park is free)
Another plus to Van Saun is the 4 different play areas, seperated by appropriate age group. One area is under 24 months, another area is for 2 - 7 year olds, the next area is for kids over 7 years old, and last is for kids that are in wheel chairs. The play areas offer swings, slides, tunnels to climb through and wall climbs.
My parents took me to this park on a monthly basis when I was growing up in NYC, and when I had my children, I brought them here numerous times as well. I LOVE THIS PARK!! It has a lot of special memories for me, including family barbecues, bike riding with friends, plus its the place where my daughter learned where to ride her bike for the first time. There's so much to do here. There are pony rides, a carousel that was added after I grew up, tennis courts, a zoo, and a cool train that takes you around the zoo (free on certain days). It has a great family-friendly atmosphere and it's one of my most favorite places to be.
I have got to say, I loved Van Saun Park even before I had kids. I remember when my father used to take me here, weekend after weekend, and just enjoy the surroundings and seeing all the animals. That's exactly what I wanted to do with my kids, and I've been trying my best to make it happen. Since Van Saun Park is only 15 minutes away from my house, it's no hassle to get to. My kids love playing in the park and on the playground. However, most of all they love to see the animals. The train ride is a MUST, especially if you have young kids. I'm sure they will be demanding it. It's a really nice day out without spending a ton of money. Also if you get the chance around Halloween, you should check it out with the kids. They have a little "trick or treat" section where the kids dress up and go trick or treating to stands around the park. Also they put up decorations throughout the train route to make it spooky, but not too spooky for kids.
you've never made it for a day trip, I'd highly recommend it. So affordable and a mangeable size for a younger family. A carousel, pony rides, train ride and various animal exhibits. Gotta love the golden tamarins! Enjoy the adjacent playground and county park facilities. They recently added a wonderful indoor learning center that is a welcome cooling off point. The food for purchase is limited but picnic tables are available in the park.
This park is great. You can spend an entire day there without breaking the bank. There are a few playgrounds, pavilions, a zoo, pony rides and a train. The train does not run every day and has a small fee. The pony rides have a small fee as well. Although we don't park anywhere near the pony rides so my kids have never noticed. The zoo has local animals and many that have been saved from local areas.
And it is very close to shopping. If you make a day of it and go clothes shopping, there is no sales tax in NJ!!!
