Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site features a reconstructed 1840’s adobe fur trading post on the mountain branch of the Santa Fe Trail where traders, trappers, travelers, and Plains Indian tribes came together in peaceful terms for trade. Today, living historians recreate the sights, sounds, and smells of the past with guided tours, demonstrations, and special events.

This is a neat side trip and it's the best when you can catch the re-enactments of the fort. You can visit quickly, or spend some leisurely time here. You really get the feel that you're inside the fort as it was when it was so important to travellers! Make sure to purchase, and eat, nearby Rocky Ford cataloupe and other melons!
Junior Ranger program available here, and your children can become a member of 1840s society and learn valuable trade skills :) We particularly like the historical recreations and hands on nature of the historical site. My girls are looking forward to participating in the Kid's Quarters program this summer.
