Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, but this dust belonged to one of America's revolutionary and diplomatic heroes, Ben Franklin.  The Burial Ground also has 1,400 markers including some of America’s most prominent Colonial and Revolution-era leaders.

"Interesting little side trip."

When in Philadelphia, it just seems appropriate to make a stop by Benjamin Franklin's grave.  It's in a cemetery situated behind a wrought iron fence, so if viewing his actual grave is all you care to do, you can accomplish this quite easily.  I went to Phila with my daughter's 6th grade class so we made it a point to actually enter the cemetery and walk around to see who else was buried there and to actually stand beside the grave.  We tossed a penny on the grave as you are supposed to do for luck, and were photographed next to it.  Then we walked the rest of the cemetery and saw the other famous and not-so-famous gravesites.  It was interesting to see the others that were buried here, and to imagine what the Philadelphia of their time would have been like.

While I would advise most people in a hurry to stop and look through the fence at the actual grave of Franklin, if you have the time to walk around, it is an interesting stroll, especially with kids who have studied Colonial America recently.

"5 Minutes and a little history"

As you’re wandering through Philadelphia, take a moment and stop to pay your respects to one of our country’s most influential statesmen, inventors, authors and Renaissance men, Benjamin Franklin. His grave is visible through an iron gate at the southeast corner of 5th and Arch Streets.  Legend has it that tossing a penny on his grave will bring the tosser good luck.

"Ben Franklin's Grave"

If the legs in your family are still going strong, take a couple minutes to walk by Benjamin Franklin’s grave. Franklin and 4 other signers of the Declaration of Independence are buried at Christ Church in Philadelphia. You don’t have to go into the cemetery. Franklin’s grave can be seen through the iron gate at the corner of 5th and Arch Streets. Bring some pennies for the kids to throw. Locals say tossing a penny on his tombstone brings good luck.
