The only lighthouse located on Mount Desert Island is the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse. It is currently a private residence for a Coast Guard commander, but the lighthouse offers trails on both sides each with it's own beautiful view.
You simply cannot visit the Northeast coastline without making time to stop at one of the many lighthouses that are found there. This specific lighthouse is the picture perfect type that everyone wants to see. We took a photo of the lighthouse and printed it in black and white. So many visitors to our home have seen the photo and asked where that lighthouse is…it is truly an inviting scene that brightens my day just thinking about it.
It's a small lighthouse, you can only go around part of the outside, and it's just not that impressive. Our kids would say it is boring and our kids are not bored easily. There's just not much to it. You walk down, stay five minutes, and come back.
The lighthouse is located just a short easy walk from the parking lot. You cannot tour the lighouthouse because a Coast Guard family lives there, however you can explore around it and read the informative signs. The view of the coast from up here is beautiful.
If you take the trail to the left of the lighthouse, you can go down very steep steps and view the lighthouse from the coastline, looking up. You can explore the rocks and tide pools here and it offers a marvelous view of the lighthouse.
My kids enjoyed playing on the rocks and exploring the tide pools and watching the tour boats. They were a bit disappointed they couldn't explore the lighthouse itself.
The parking lot is small and on a busy day you will need to be patient and wait for someone to return to their car and pull out before you can pull in. There are bathrooms located in the parking lot.
From Bar Harbor you drive through southwest harbor to get to the light (the quiet side of the island) which is much different then bar harbor - same quaint feeling just smaller... the light is attended to by the US Coast Guard - you cant go in but the view from the light is breathtaking. There are two different paths to view the light from different directions. Parking is available as well as public restrooms.
