This is fun place to soak in the sun but is definitely meant for older children or teenagers as the water is deep and where is it more shallow the rocks are slippery. One thing that may take some getting used to, are the plants growing on the bottom since it is a natural pool. They have clean and nice dressing rooms and bathrooms and the grounds are usually kept pretty clean.
Ok, this is a cool place in the middle of Austin... and I do mean COOL! On average the pool is 68 degrees year round. So, if you have a braver family than mine you may love this. It is located in lovely, busy Zilker park. And a lot of people love it during the hot summer months, but we are chilly chickens!
Love love LOVE this place. For so many reasons: it's free in the "winter", which is the perfect weather for swimming (that's my alaskan coming out); I get to go topless if I want to and nobody freaks out; it's just plain fun. I love coming here. Swimming is really low impact on my knee, so it's becoming a daily routine to go swimming here in the mornings/afternoon, when it's relatively empty.
Note: the ducks are fake. Just so you don't freak out when you run into them.
Barton Springs is a spring fed man made pool. It is HUGE!!! And a great place to swim! It is quite cold (68 to 70 degrees year round) but in the 100 degree temperatures in Austin make it feel great. There is a very shallow end for small kids and a very very deep part for good swimmers. I spend a lot of my childhood there and expect my kids to do the same.
