This theatre is always amazing. The shows are always very professionally performed and very entertaining. They even have kids plays - which is a great way to introduce your kids to the arts! Plus - there is a ton to do in Abingdon. Definitely a must!
No matter what age your child is, you will find a show to please. If you are just driving through the area you can stop in and tour the place. It's a lovely treasure of a theater and worth the drive if you are a few hours away. Top notch children's workshops as well.
One of Abingdon’s premier attractions is this theater. Founded in 1933 (when the admission price was “35 cents or the equivalent in produce”), Barter claims fame as one of the oldest professional resident theaters in the United States. Noted for the caiber of both its productions and performers, Barter stars have included Gregory Peck, Hume Cronyn, Patricia Neal, Ernest Borgnine, Barry Corbin, Jerry Hardin, and others. During its season Barter performs on three stages: Barter Theatre Main Stage, Barter Stage II, and the Player Company for young people. Barter also offers workshops for kids. It also has a ghost: Actors have reported seeing the ghost of founder Robert Poterfield on opening nights, sitting in the audience in his white dinner jacket.
