If you're looking to get away from conglomerate bookstores and support your local commerce while visiting NYC - Bank Street Books by Columbia University has a quaint but sufficient children and young adult book selection. Another highlight is their reading room and play area for the 0-3 crowd. Take note that the store is in the basement so strollers are to be kept outside.
They have a decent foreign language book section from - Japanese, to Italian and everything inbetween. I personally prefer to get baby books from thrift stores because they are the books most frequently purchased and disguarded quickly. Look for keepsake books or hard to find titles!
Bring your own bag for any purchases !
I am in love with Bank Street Books! The store is conveniently located and very well priced. I love the author/book signing events there. One great thing about Bank Street Books is the fact thats it's calm and peaceful, unlike most Barnes & Nobles and Borders stores. Its atmosphere is wonderful in my opinion and it really reminds me of small quaint book store that you see in the movies and on tv.
Bank Street Books is a staple of the Upper West Side community. I often stop into this cozy shop and browse through the wonderful selection of books and educational toys. The staff is friendly and helpful. They host many author events, from Julia Alvarez, a Dominican-American author (How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accent) whose novels and poetry I love to other authors of children's books and shows. This is one of those neighborhood gems that never looses it’s luster.
